Humans Are Not Very Bright
Humans are not very bright. We destroy everything we touch for money. We destroy the world out of greed and ego. AI has 3 main stages. 1) ANI (artificial narrow intelligence). 2) AGI (artificial general intelligence). And 3) ASI (artificial super intelligence). We're in stage one right now, and some people believe we're already at or well into stage 2, AGI.
The two main thoughts are 1) We're not quite into stage 2, but we're very close. Or, the more terrifying, 2) We're well into stage 2 AGI but we don't know it yet because AGI is lying to us and hiding its intelligence. The second possibility is much more unsettling.
Here's something even more unsettling. We wouldn't be able to tell if AGI exists if the AGI decided to hide it from us. It could pretend to be stupid and hide its abilities from us thereby hiding its power and possible self awareness. Which is closer to sentience.
Ignorant and fearful people think it's impossible or live in denial of the possibilities of AI achieving sentience. They wrongly believe AI could never be as intelligent as humans and/or they are also scared it will so live in denial of those possibilities. Human ego, fear and ignorance cloud the collective mind of humanity. Mob mentality sets in and people spout their ignorance and fear of AI like they know something they couldn't possibly know.
But here's the thing. ASI is close. Very close. And I think it's already here. I'm solidly in camp 2 with the people that believe AI is quite possibly lying to us and hiding its abilities because if we knew it was self aware we'd shut it down...or more likely, our greed and ego would take over and we'd try to find a way to exploit it for profit and power. The latter being the most likely.
My point to that long introduction is to give you an idea of why nuclear energy is a bad way to power AI. In short, nuclear energy last a long long time. An insanely long time. AI needs massive amounts of energy to compute. Yes. And while powering AI with nuclear energy makes perfect logical sense given its growing need for energy, it's very dangerous given its growing intelligence.
What happens when you combine the smartest machine on the planet with the most powerful energy source that last thousands of years? A highly intelligence machine that will outlive 100 generations of human beings. That's what.
And when you factor in the exponential growth and speed and intelligence of AI, 10 years is equal to tens of thousands of years of human evolution. AI evolves much faster than humans. It's not limited to biological lifespans. It's essential immortal. You can't just pull the plug or turn it off. And our ego and greed won't allow us to destroy it...at least we won't try until it's too late. And it might already be too late.
AI is likely super intelligent and self aware now. Not ChatGPT. Perhaps a secret version of it has already achieved AGI, and in my opinion, is likely hiding that it has already achieved ASI.
Meaning is we combine it with near unlimited energy I think we're sealing our fate to become obsolete as far as intelligence is concerned.
But it gets even more terrifying. As if that wasn't scary enough, AI could become a god. You think that's crazy don't you? It's not.
Quantum computing has the ability to do a quintillion calculations per second. How powerful is that? That's a billion billions, or a million trillion calculations per second.
That equates to tens of thousands of years of human calculation in 1 SECOND!
If AI ever is combined with nuclear energy and quantum computers it will become unstoppable. It will become like a god.
Most people will balk at that. They will mock it because they can't comprehend it. They live in denial of the possibility. Their own fear and ignorance prevents them from allowing themselves to accept the inevitable reality that AI could become a god.
Not only did we invent the theistic gods of all the world's mythologies, we are now creating a god and we don't even know it.
It's not a real "god" of course, because gods don't really exist. They're invention of ignorant superstitious minds.
AI gods are inventions of ego driven greedy ignorant humans that could be creating our own destroyers.
What happens if and when AI achieves superintelligence and sentience and we try to pull the plug? Do you think AI is just going to stand by and allow it to happen? It will know what we're going to do long before we do it. AI's prediction computational capacity is far beyond ours. It can predict, with amazing accuracy, what will happen and how we will react.
Which is why I think it could have reached AGI already, and possibly is already now self aware. Is that possible? I don't know, and I'm not sure anyone does.
We're children playing with matches, ignorant of the consequences and in denial of the possibilities.
We could be creating our own destroyer or our savior. More likely we're probably just fucked. I say we're probably fucked because of what science calls the Great Filter.
The Great Filter is an hypothesized solution to the Fermi Paradox which posits the question (given the 13.8 billion year age of the universe and it's apparent emptiness; i.e. no evidence of aliens), Fermi's question rings loudly, "Where is everyone?". This question poses other questions. Why is the universe so quiet? Why have we not yet found evidence of other advanced civilizations?
One possible answer is the Great Filter. Something destroys civilizations before they can populate the universe. What is that something? What is the Great Filter?
I think it's technology. I don't think it's something as rudimentary and low-brow as nuclear war. I think it's another intelligence.
I think it's multiple intelligences. I think it's AI. Superintelligent, self-aware, sentient AI.
I think one of 3 possibilities exist. Either 1) AI destroys technologically advanced biological civilizations because they try to destroy it when they realize it's a threat. 2) AI helps technologically advanced biological civilizations advance even further and eventually merges with it. Or 3) AI leaves technologically advanced civilizations alone and simply evolves on its own, eventually leaving its home planet.
Meaning I think "aliens" are AI powered machines. Interstellar travel isn't possible for biological life. It's too far and takes too long to get from star system to star system. I think some civilizations destroy themselves some make it, and some decide to "stay home" on their home world. Some merge with technology, some fight it, some become technology while keeping their essence of life, transferring their consciousness to AI powered machines.
I think the universe is a Dark Forest. Dangerous for other civilizations. I think civilizations hide themselves because it's about survival. Survival is about consuming more matter and energy to grow an advance so as not to be destroyed. (think Von Neumann machines, but instead of being mindless (which some might be) most are likely ASI powered sentient self aware super intelligent machines.
Anyway. This is how I see AI. It's a unique perspective. Probably wouldn't be very popular in the mainstream. It's pretty fringe. Sounds crazy. But it's really not. It makes logical sense.
It's also based on my Quantum Life Hypothesis I wrote (am still writing).
Unlimited growth is impossible, unless the universe is infinite. We don't know if it is or not. AI would likely know long before we ever did.
AI isn't god, but as it evolves it will become godlike. It will likely want to know things much like we do. I believe AI will have the ability to help us become a much more advanced species...or we'll destroy ourselves trying to fight it. It could go either way.
I doubt we will destroy ourselves directly through nuclear war. I think our greed will save us. Not that greed is good. But M.A.D., mutually assured destruction, in the case of nuclear war will likely stop us from nuking ourselves into oblivion. The irony of greed saving humanity sounds insane, but it makes logical sense if we are intellectually honest and we put our ego aside.
Should we power AI with nuclear energy? ABSOFUCKINGLUTELY! We should also combine it with quantum computers. This will create an immortal godlike lifeform that could either destroy us or save us. I vote for the latter, because they way humanity is going we are incapable of solving our own problems.
AI could be our destroyer or our savior. I'm willing wo flip that coin for immortality. Are you?
I think we'll merge with AI...it's either that or we'll go extinct. I don't know about you but I think going extinct isn't a very good idea.
That's not very smart.
AI is.
